Fake it ’til you make it? 32% of employees admit to holding a position they lied about!

Given that remote work is more important than ever and many interviews are conducted online, does a virtual environment make it easier to lie to secure a job? Are employers being fished without knowing it?

StaffCircle, a leading platform for employee experience, culture & performance management, conducted groundbreaking research into employee catfishing in 2022 to find out not only how common it is, but also what employers need to be wary of.

After a study of over 1,500 UK workers, StaffCircle was shocked to discover that…

Over 30% of respondents admitted to having lied on their CVs, with the majority saying it was to appear more experienced or competent.

With the onset of a global pandemic in 2020, many people were unable to work and businesses that continued to function did so remotely. As a result, many of those with formerly stable careers have been forced to seek new roles, often in new industries.

As many companies did not have proper procedures in place for a fully remote recruitment process, most interviews were conducted via email and/or video conferencing. StaffCircle wanted to know if lying when not face-to-face doesn’t give people more confidence, and the results were pretty incredible.

Over 62% of those who admitted to having lied earlier on their resume said they would be more likely to lie if they were in a remote job. StaffCircle was forced to delve even deeper into the white lies potential employees have been willing to tell and how employers can help avoid costly hiring mistakes by being more thorough in their hiring process.

A staggering 93% of those who admitted to lying in the interview process have not been caught…yet!

Amazingly, almost all who have confessed to beautifying during their interviews have never been found out. Furthermore, 40% still hold the position they lied for!

Mark Seeman, Founder and CEO of StaffCircle said, “Companies need to rethink their application process to improve hiring accuracy. Less than a quarter of respondents reported a “very thorough” application process, and less than 7% of those who admitted to lying to get a job were caught. HR and performance management software introduces more rigorous interview and performance management features. Breaking down the specific skills required for each role leads to more informed hiring decisions. Should an untrue candidate go through the net, continuous performance tracking will identify any skill deficits and enable further training.”

Over 86% of people who have lied in the past have done so more than once to land a new role. More than 63% of respondents said they would be tempted to do it again.

Incredibly, the majority of respondents said they lied to get up to three different positions. Most admitted it was just to embellish their previous experiences, with a third declaring they would be willing to lie again to secure a new role.

The results show that employers can do more as part of their application process.

The results of the StaffCircle survey are truly eye-opening and provide important insight for employers. Although more than 70% of respondents said their interviews were either “fair” or “very thorough,” employees who lied during the application process still managed to slip through the cracks. This shows that while employers feel they have a thorough application process, there is definitely room for improvement, especially when it comes to remote positions.
